Expeditions, Navigation, Guided Walks and Trekking
Our Trekking group are now looking forward to the trip to the Dolomites in September. On the last visit most of us queued up in the village gear shop and paid our €10 per day for the kit, which covered helmet, harness and Via Ferrata Lanyard.
As some of us will be of into the mountains straight from the car park, its time to look to get our own.
From years of trial and error, up until recently mainly using very old kit, I would recommend the following combination;
This is a lightweight and easily adjustable harness, with the added advantage of leg clips making putting them on and taking off much easier. The waist belt is padded, has gear hoops and a haul loop at the back, useful for the clipping in of the Via Ferrata Lanyard.
You will need a lanyard such as the Salewa kit shown left or the lesser well known Rock Empire kit;
I would also recommend the Black Diamond Iron Crusier or Easy Rider. This is the kit I have had and found it easy to use, tidy with its elasticated arms; this has no shock absorbing properties but rather is meant to stop the cows’ tails being annoying – they retract so as not to be too long and keep out of your way.
It comes with two of Black Diamond’s specially designed easy action karabiners. They are released by the twin action of squeezing with the heel of the hand and the straightforward opening of the gate – it’s really easy when you’ve practiced a couple of times.
Black Diamond have a great video showing them in action.
Mits are useful as well, hears a link;
